The Jute Sector occupies an important place in the economy of the country in general and eastern region in particular.
The Government of India has launched the Jute Technology Mission (JTM) for the overall development of the jute sector in the country. Ministry of Textiles has nominated The Jute Corporation of India Ltd. as the nodal agency for implementation of Mini Mission-III under overall guidance and supervision of the Jute Commissioner. The mandate of this Mini Mission-III is to develop and ensure efficient market linkages and value addition for raw jute through upgradation of the existing market infrastructure and facilities to be provided to farmers.
Objectives
Creation of strong market linkage by establishing/upgrading marketing infrastructure and construction of Departmental Procurement Centres by JCI.
Work Plan
Development/Upgradation of Ten selected Market Yards willing to upgrade marketing facilities in major jute growing states in India under the aegis of APMC’s and construction of 20 Departmental Purchase Center of JCI.
Establishment of Farmers' Information Center
Jute Information Centres are proposed to be set up in the marketing facilities so that the farmers may timely get their information regarding ruling market price of raw jute/mesta and the future trend of the market.
Expected Benefits
Marketing avenues & information would be gradually extended to 25% of the total raw jute/mesta produced in the country which in quantitative terms comes to around 4,05,000 MT of raw jute/mesta.
Project Management Commitee
The Government hereby constitutes the Project Management Committee for managing the Mini Mission III & IV.
Strategy
Providing basic infrastructural facilities through development/upgradation of 10 jute Market Yards in the jute growing states under the aegis of APMC’s and construction of 20 operational premises of the JCI.
Establishment/Development of Jute Marketing Facilities. Infrastructure / facilities / amenities required for ideal jute / mesta marketing and it is proposed to develop two types of market facilities.
Implementing Agencies
The Jute Corporation of India will act as complementing agencies for all the schemes of mini mission III. The construction of marketing facilities/infrastructure may be undertaken by Agricultural Marketing Board of the respective States.
Improvement of Retting at Farm Level
Jute retting as practiced now is age old and based on traditional experience of jute cultivators. As availability of water gets reduced, problems related to pollution generate the need for alternative technologies to be developed.
