In order to prevent coconut prices going further down - Kerala Govt may start procuring raw coconut from January 2010
Mr G. Sudhakaran, Minister for Cooperatives in Kerala Govt, has announced the proposal while speaking to newspersons. As a matter of fact, he stated, the State Government is already procuring copra from the farmers.
The decision was taken at a State-level meeting of the representatives of cooperative institutions involved in the procurement programme. It was also decided to relax maximum permissible moisture content level in copra to 8 percent during rainy season instead of normal 6 percent.
The meeting has also decided to raise the handling charge that the State Government would provide to the procurement agencies. The societies involved in the procurement programme would also be provided with yard facilities for drying copra.
The Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Federation (Marketfed) and the Kerala State Coconut Farmers' Cooperative Federation (Kerafed) would continue to be the nodal agencies for procurement during the season beginning January 2010.
